Key ADA Requirements for Turnstiles & Gates
Minimum 36-inch clear width
All accessible entry lanes must provide at least 36 inches of clear passage width for wheelchair users and mobility aid users.
Maximum 5 lbs operating force
Gates must not require more than 5 lbs of force to operate, ensuring accessibility for individuals with limited strength.
Accessible route requirement
At least one accessible lane must be provided at every entry point, with clear signage directing users to accessible lanes.
Level floor surface
The floor surface at accessible entry points must be stable, firm, and slip-resistant with no changes in level exceeding 1/2 inch.
Maneuvering clearance
Adequate maneuvering clearance must be provided on both sides of the gate for wheelchair approach and departure.
