Speed Lane Turnstile
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a speed lane turnstile?
A speed lane turnstile (also called a fast lane turnstile or optical speed gate) is a high-throughput access control barrier with retractable glass or acrylic wings that open and close rapidly. Unlike traditional tripod turnstiles, speed lane turnstiles process up to 40 passages per minute per lane, making them ideal for corporate lobbies, transit hubs, and high-traffic environments.
What is the difference between a speed lane and an optical turnstile?
The terms are often used interchangeably. 'Optical turnstile' refers to the detection technology (infrared optical sensors that detect tailgating), while 'speed lane' or 'fast lane' describes the physical barrier style โ slim, retractable wings that open quickly. All our speed lane turnstiles use optical detection technology.
How fast do speed lane turnstiles process people?
Our speed lane turnstiles process 30โ40 passages per minute per lane, compared to 15โ20 for tripod turnstiles and 8โ12 for staffed entry points. A 4-lane installation can process 120โ160 people per minute โ sufficient for most corporate lobby peak loads.
Are speed lane turnstiles ADA compliant?
Speed lane turnstiles are typically 22โ24 inches wide, which does not meet the 36-inch minimum ADA/AODA clear width requirement. Every speed lane installation must include at least one ADA-compliant wide lane swing gate (which we supply and install) to meet accessibility requirements.
Can speed lane turnstiles be used outdoors?
Most speed lane turnstiles are designed for indoor use. For outdoor or semi-outdoor environments (covered parking garages, covered walkways), we offer IP54-rated models with stainless steel enclosures. For fully exposed outdoor applications, full-height turnstiles are recommended.
What access control systems do your speed lane turnstiles integrate with?
Our speed lane turnstiles are compatible with standard access control signal inputs. Contact us to confirm compatibility with your specific system.
